Driving on Gravel Roads

How to Drive Safely on Gravel Roads

Gravel roads are a big part of the Namibian self-drive experience. They require a different driving style from paved roads, with a focus on speed, distance and smooth vehicle control.

Keep it smooth and controlled:

  • Drive on the left and stay clear of the road edge.
  • Maximum 80 km/h on gravel roads – slower when conditions require it.
  • Keep a 150–200 m distance from other vehicles, especially in dust.
  • Keep your headlights on at all times.
  • Watch for loose gravel, ruts, sand, potholes and changing road conditions.
  • Slow down before curves and brake gently. Avoid sudden steering or braking.
  • Keep both hands on the wheel and stay focused – conditions can change quickly.

The golden rule for gravel road driving in Namibia: Don’t rush. Smooth, steady driving gives you better control, more comfort and a safer journey.

Enjoy the road – Namibia is best experienced at its own pace.
