Water and Rivers

Water, Rivers & Crossings

Water can quickly become a challenge, especially after heavy rain. On gravel roads, puddles may hide deep holes, soft ground or washouts. Never drive through blindly: If possible, check the depth and surface first, then cross slowly and under control.

River Crossings

For river crossings, water depth, current strength and the entry and exit points are critical. Flowing water can push a vehicle sideways even at relatively low depth. Only cross when the situation can be safely assessed. Maintain a steady speed, do not stop and avoid changing gears while crossing.

Flash Floods

During the rainy season, dry riverbeds can turn into dangerous flash floods within minutes. Never camp in a riverbed.

Seawater

Never drive through seawater. Salt water can cause serious damage to the vehicle, including its electrical components and brakes.

When in doubt: wait, turn around or take a safe detour.
