Traffic Rules & Speed Limits in Namibia

If you are driving a rental vehicle in Namibia, make sure you know the essential traffic rules.

  • Left-hand traffic: Always drive on the left and overtake on the right when safe.
  • Speed limits: 60 km/h in towns, 120 km/h outside towns on paved roads, and max. 80 km/h on gravel roads. Always follow lower posted limits and slow down further when conditions require it.
  • Seat belts: Mandatory for the driver and all passengers.
  • Headlights: Outside built-up areas, headlights must be on even during the day.
  • Alcohol: Drinking and driving is prohibited.
  • Mobile phones: Only use with a hands-free system.
  • Keep your distance: Especially on gravel roads, allow plenty of space. Dust, loose surfaces and longer stopping distances require extra caution.
  • Drive according to conditions: Adjust your speed to the road, weather and visibility.

Important: Night driving is not permitted with our rental vehicles.

Always follow road signs, right-of-way rules and local warnings. When in doubt: slow down and assess the situation early.
