Wildlife on the Roads
Wildlife on Namibia’s Roads
Wildlife is part of Namibia, and animals can appear on or beside the road at any time. Especially outside towns, in rural areas and national parks, stay alert and drive defensively.
When animals are near the road
- Reduce speed early and be prepared to stop.
- Always expect more animals to follow.
- Keep a safe distance and give animals time and space to move away.
- Do not honk, rush them or make sudden steering or braking movements.
Take extra care around elephants, rhinos and other large animals. Keep your distance, remain calm and never try to pass an animal too closely.
In national parks: Stay inside the vehicle. Exiting is only permitted in designated areas.
Wildlife is often more active in the early morning and evening. Night driving is not permitted, and driving at dawn or dusk is strongly discouraged.
Stay alert, keep your distance and give wildlife time to move away.
